Day 18 Hill City (South Dakota)
Hill City is in the Black Hills of South Dakota and rises above the plains which seem to go on endlessly in all directions. We decide to take a leisurely morning and relax, read and catch up with the washing (Mary). I do some van related tasks - cleaning the caked-on dead flies from the windshield (windscreen).
As lunchtime approaches we drive the short distance into town and explore options for lunch before settling on the Swiss Hotel where we enjoy a salads followed by rather nice ice creams (single scoops this time after Cody comments on FB).
We then drive out to Mount Rushmore to visit the giant sculptures of four significant presidents of the US carved into the mountain. This is an immense work and its execution is spectacular.
We meet up with some of the others from our trip and decide to stay on for the lighting ceremony. I'm sorry to say this lived up to expectations and was over the top jingoistic american nonsense. The visit to see the sculpture is worth it... but the rest a distortion of reality!
We return to camp and head for bed.
